The cats don't like hanging out in the same room since she hunts them relentlessly. She's a terror for our possessions as well. She loves books - tearing them apart. She's very interested in my old D D books and things. Actually, her focus lately has been on trying to tear up old Warhammer catalogs and White Dwarf magazines. I've got to stop her, but I haven't played 40k in a long time.

Regarding D D, I was pretty upset about the cancellation of Dungeon and Dragon magazine (announced in April 07). The final issue came out in September, if I recall correctly. Seems like it was longer than that, but no matter. In any case, since that time I have been a big supporter of Paizo. I'm a subscriber to their Pathfinder AP, their Pathfinder Chronicles, their Pathfinder Modules, their Planet Stories line, and anything else they offer as a subscription. I've also bought a ton of their product off the shelf. I really wanted to support Paizo because they've always produced stellar material and the decision to take the magazines away from them wasn't really their choice. Since that time I've not bought a single item from WotC (or Hasbro). That actually makes me pretty happy. I didn't want to since I really felt that WotC was telling me that they don't respect me as a customer, but that doesn't matter because they think I'm too weak willed to stop buying from them.

Turns out they're wrong. Even better, Paizo has decided that it won't be converting to 4th edition. Now, they could do things in the line of 3.5, but there are certainly some restrictions. So, they're making a 'new game' that is supposed to be compatible with the existing D D rules. I'm very excited by the prospect, and certainly hope that this will be a product line I can continue to support. I have some concerns with the 'alpha release', but the fact is that they're open to input, and the boards are full of lively debate. I don't think there is one view that is inherently 'best', but I have concerns about losing flexibility for the sake of ease. I want to make the game easier, but I think it can be done while retaining and increasing options, which I favor.

This has worked out to me spending a lot of time working on the rules for D D. I've experimented with some 'unusual' house rules. Long story short, I'm convinced that I can come out with an easy to use, simple version for my own games that works well. The problem is that to make it truly 'easy', I really need to put everything down on paper. And that's a lot of work. I COULD do it, but I don't know that I want to do it. So, I certainly will continue with the Pathfinder, and hope that they'll agree with enough of my ideas that Pathfinder will work for me.

My main e-mail address hasn't been working for a week or so. It should be back up and running in the next few days, I hope.

Work continues to go well. I was hired on in June of 2006. Since that time I have been promoted (doing the same job) twice, and am eligible for another similar promotion after April, if I do well. I fully expect to. I was #1 in the office in January. I'm also applying for some positions that involve doing a different job. One is a coaching position and will make the transition into supervisor pretty easy.

My wife is waiting to see if she got a major grant for the next academic year. If not she will have a full teaching appointment at the University, so we know we'll continue to do fine financially, but with a young one arranging our schedules to avoid day care expenses can be a major hassle. We've done that so far. She currently teaches on Monday night, and Tuesday and Thursday morning. I don't work on Sun-Tues (and work 10 hours on Wed-Sat). This means that the only conflict we have is on Thurs, and my work lets me come in an hour late so she teaches in the morning and then I go to work.

The baby got to spend Spring Break in Arizona with her mother and her maternal grandparents. I think they had a lot of fun. Now the grandparents are expecting to come out sometime around July. Which is absolutely fine. They also intend to bring us a minivan that they don't need. I never really wanted to be the minivan kind of person, but with a baby, it is simply easier. And a second car certainly could be very convenient. And a free second car, how could anyone say no? Even the insurance won't really cost much since I'll pick up the multi-car discount. And I pay practically nothing for auto insurance anyway, even with my crazy low deductibles ($0 for comp, $50 for collision). That's Iowa for you.

Case in point, I finally told Stuart's dad yesterday that he had to help financially support Stuart. My words were something along the line of, "I only had one kid for a reason, because that's all I can afford. You need to pay for Stuart's meals etc." Do you know what Stuart's dad said? Do you? Bats told me he was leaving Second Life a few days ago. I was okay while he told me, but it really hit me hard when I was taking my stuff back into inventory - because he wants to sell the little beach paradise we shared. I had tried to write this blog post a few days ago, but it was surprisingly difficult to do. Now that I am over the initial shock of it - it seems to be a bit better.

The thought of leaving Second Life was on my mind, I can't deny that at all. Without Bats there, I can't bring myself to even look cute anymore. The motivation is gone. However, the realization hit me shortly after, that I have way too much real money in this virtual world, and leaving really isn't much of an option anymore. I think as much as it hurts, I will remain in Second Life and continue to do what I do... write fashion reviews, shop and run Imperial Elegance.

We will miss our rezzdays, which were coming up next month (BTW, Sorry I missed your party, Cecille! Happy late rezzday to you! :D ). We had planned to spend them together, and actually get married on July 7th, one year after we became partners. But no.... not anymore. I will, however, keep him in my profile labeled as my partner, for as long as he will allow me to. Because, even if he is gone from SL, I still consider Bats to be Sai's virtual partner.

I don't think I have the courage to say much of anything else, because as much as I tried not to get attached to someone through a virtual world, it was my mistake that I actually did.

I will switch gears now and talk about something non-SL related. The Sims 2. I have taken a liking to playing this, and seems to be my refuge away from Second Life.
